Aprender y Crecer is a program dedicated to supporting public education in Latin America and the Caribbean. Founded in 2006 by Price Philanthropies, a private nonprofit foundation established by the founders of PriceSmart, Aprender y Crecer’s mission is to provide educational materials to students in public schools in order to inspire both teachers and parents to improve the educational experiences of children.
Aprender y Crecer—with support and contributions from PriceSmart and its members—donates a package of school supplies to each participating student, as well as materials for teachers in participating schools. Since 2006, the program has provided more than 685,600 school supply packages to participating students. Additionally, the program provides educational materials, literature collections for school libraries, and cleaning supplies for the schools. In return, these schools develop and implement a continuous improvement plan to encourage reading and improve their students’ reading skills.
One of Aprender y Crecer’s primary goals is to promote reading, both in the classroom and at home. Since its inception, the program has provided more than 843,000 books to students to keep as their own, as well as more than 149,000 books to school libraries. In 2020, Aprender y Crecer will provide up to four books to every student participating in the program, depending on their grade level. What’s more, Aprender y Crecer organizes professional development for teachers to strengthen reading instruction, and workshops for parents to promote reading at home.
Aprender y Crecer continues to grow in the region and currently benefits approximately 125,000 students and 5,500 teachers in more than 230 primary schools in Colombia, Costa Rica, the Dominican Republic, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua, and Panama.
